Ceramic Table Lamps and Pendants Designed From the Bottom Up

Friends for more than a decade, Frances Palmer, a ceramic artist, and Chad Jacobs, a lighting designer, never thought to collaborate until one of Ms. Palmer’s clients asked her to design a lamp. She asked Mr. Jacobs, whose company is called Bone Simple Design, for help with the shade and wiring. Three years later, the pair has developed a collection of 16 table lamps and 10 pendants, all one of a kind. Ms. Palmer made the bases, some inspired by Korean ceramics, others by Alberto Giacometti’s lamps for Jean-Michel Frank, and Mr. Jacobs decided on appropriate shades. He explored different materials, including elastic banding and rope, and even hand-painted stylized dahlias on one, inspired by Ms. Palmer’s garden. “He gave me free rein, and I did the same,” Ms. Palmer said.
