When: September 16, 2013 - September 18, 2013
Location: Istanbul - Halic Center, Turkey
OTTO ZOO is pleased to annouce the participation to the first edition of ART INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL, with artists Sebastiano Mauri, Stephen Mueller, Seher Shah.
The three artists meet on the ground of the cultural nomadism, of the wandering, both physical and mental, of the syncretism, of the fascination for the exotic, both in their works and in their artistic practice. Their works convey the ability to mix different cultural elements, to create imaginary worlds, both abstract and figurative, romantic and rational, contemplative and spirited.
At the fair, we will present Sebastiano Mauri's (Milan, 1972; lives and works between Milan and Buenos Aires) new series of mixed media sculptures under bell jars, Aliens versus Gods, in which he combines Alien and Predator toys with images of divinities of different religions. As in all his sculptural mixed media works, the contradictory iconography invites to a close observation and the discovery of a multitude of minute details.
Mauri's eclectic, emotional figurativeness unveils itself also in the form of video, photography, painting achieved through collecting and archiving images, stories, symbols, bric-à-brac of the new globalised market.
Stephen Mueller (Norfolk, Virginia, 1947 – New York, 2011) in the last twenty years of his career has turned his practice from the New York tradition of abstraction towards more Asian and mystic sources, reflecting an array of eclectic influences and interests.
At the fair, we will present a selection of his rare, precious watercolors and his large acrylic on canvas will be presented. Soft washes and stains of color nuzzle up against one another, their forms suggestive of elements derived from Tibetan thangka paintings and Rajasthani miniatures. Geometrical forms appear on occasion, describing the similarities between mandalas, cell structures and the silhouettes of temple architecture, but also the geometrical abstractions of Hilma af Klint.
Seher Shah (Karachi, Pakistan, 1975; lives and works in New York), develops powerful black and white graphic constructions exploring the many permutations of personal and historical collective spatial memory. Trained as an architect, she starts with her own detailed drawings and then combines fragments of these with found imagery, both diagrammatic and photographic.
The three works exhibited in Istanbul, through her thoughtful and innovative draftsmanship and compositional style, will present dynamic landscapes of imagined recollections and possible scenarios for the future.
